"The Irish Godfather of Bucks County

Born Nov 8, 1938 Died, Dec. 9, 2008

Born in Northeast Philadelphia, Joe spent much of his life in Levittown, as his family was founding members of the community. A proud Catholic and Irishman, Joe was a proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.  He served as the President of the Bucks County Board of the AOH and was an active member in the Newtown division AOH.  Joe served in the U.S. Army and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of Queen of the Universe parish, the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph the Worker Council 4215 and the St. John Neumann Assembly. He was also a member of the Newtown American Legion and many other organizations. Joe was very active with both the Lower Bucks and Philadelphia St. Patrick's Day Parade committees, serving with the Lower Bucks Committee since its inception in 1988.  He was also a founder of the Irish Festival in Philly and the head of Project Children in Bucks County.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians in Newtown, Bucks County Division 2 is proud to introduce the 2nd Annual Joe McGinnis Scholarship Fund 5K Run/Walk.  Our 1st 5k, last September, was such a great success that we were able to offer two $500.00 scholarships to very deserving students for the 2010-2011 school year.  I hope you will come out and meet the two very special recipients Ms. Claudia Deegan of Nativity of Our Lord, Warminster and Kelly Rose Seever of St. Martin of Tours, New Hope.

SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

In honor of the great works that Joe has done over the years our Division, AOH Newtown, Bucks County Division 2, is starting a scholarship in his name.

 Each year, the PFC MICHAEL BRIAN MCGINNIS USMC, Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 2 Bucks County will award a scholarship for a deserving student.  The amount of the award will be $500.00 for one year.  This scholarship is intended for 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students. 

The scholarship is competitive and the award is based on the following criteria:

1)      You must be a practicing Catholic. Your Parent(s) or Guardian(s) must be a registered member(s) of one of the following Parishes:

St. Frances Cabrini, Fairless Hills - St. Joseph the Worker, Fallsington - St. John Bosco, Hatboro - St. Bede the Venerable, Holland - St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Jamison - Immaculate Conception B.V.M., Levittown - St. Michael the Archangel, Levittown - Queen of the Universe, Levittown - Holy Trinity, Morrisville - St. John the Evangelist, Morrisville - St. Martin of Tours, New Hope - St. Andrew, Newtown - St. Vincent de Paul, Richboro - Our Lady of Good Counsel, Southampton - Nativity of Our Lord, Warminster - St. Ignatius of Antioch, Yardley

2)      Provide a recommendation by your parish priest.

3)      Provide a recommendation by a teacher.

4)      Write an essay on Michael Collins.

5)      You must be of Irish Birth or descent.  You must be able to trace your roots to Ireland.

 

The Scholarship application must be submitted and postmarked by May 1, 2010

ALL THE FOLLOWING MUST BE ENCLOSED:

  • The Completed application
  • Proof of parish membership
  • A recommendation from your parish priest
  • Minimum 1000 word essay on Michael Collins
  • Recommendation by a teacher
  • Irish Lineage
